Rajasthan Home Minister Gulab Chand Kataria has been appointed to head a 15-member Criminal Laws (Rajasthan Amendment) Ordinance Select Committee.

The Rajasthan Government yesterday tabled the controversial ordinance that seeks to shield serving and former judges, magistrates and public servants from being investigated for on-duty actions without prior sanction.

The ordinance triggered widespread criticism with the Congress party creating ruckus in Rajasthan assembly against tabling of the bill.

Senior lawyer in Rajasthan High Court AK Jain has filed a Public Interest Litigation (PIL) against the Criminal Laws (Rajasthan Amendment) Ordinance in the high court.

The ordinance also sought to bar the media from reporting on accusations against the judges and bureaucrats till the sanction to proceed with the probe is obtained.

The ordinance is an amendment to the Code of Criminal Procedure, 1973.
