Prime Minister Narendra Modi expanded his council of ministers on 5 July, ahead of the monsoon session of Parliament. Minister of State Prakash Javadekar was promoted to a senior rank while six leaders were dropped to make room for 19 new faces.

The newly inducted ministers have been handpicked from 10 states, with a special focus on poll-bound states. Three of the leaders hail from Uttar Pradesh, where Assembly polls are scheduled in 2017.

The expansion has also focused on including leaders from Dalit and backward castes. Five Dalit leaders and two tribal leaders are among the 19 new faces.

Ahead of the expansion, PM Modi had expressed his wish to bring in "doers and performers" to help make good on his promise of development and good governance.
