One person was reportedly killed after an enraged mob attacked a police station and damaged vehicles in Illambazar and Dubrajpur areas of Birbhum district in West Bengal on 2 March. The violence broke out after a college student's "objectionable" post on Facebook.

According to news reports, Sujan Mukerjee, the student's house was surrounded by the crowd last night after he uploaded the post on Facebook. Mukerjee reportedly fled after the incident but was later arrested and reportedly taken to Illambazar police station.

The mob later arrived at the police station and demanded that the accused be handed over to them, the police said.

The mob damaged the police station and police vehicles, following which the police used tear gas to disperse it. A blockade was also put up at NH-60 and several other vehicles were damaged.

The police however told the media that the situation is under control now.

The accused has been reportedly charged with various sections of the IT Act and the Indian Penal Code. A Bolpur court remanded him to 14 days' judicial custody.
