Assam: Woman delivers baby while waiting in queue in NRC centre for citizen list

A woman in Assam reportedly delivered a baby while standing in the queue at outside a National Register of Citizens (NRC) Seva Kendra last week in South Salmara district. The woman was waiting for her turn in a queue.

The woman was served a notice for the NRC verification after her name did not figure in the Assam Citizen list. She had to wait for several hours in the queue for her turn. “We have appealed the NRC authorities to re-schedule the hearing date for her family,” the South Salmara unit of All Assam Students’ Union said in a statement.


The woman had visited the centre for a scheduled hearing on Thursday. A group of women helped her deliver the baby in a room at the centre, reports in The Hindu said.

An eyewitness said that the woman had labour pains while waiting in the queue. Other women in the queue helped her in the delivery process. The incident happened last Thursday.

Over 40 lakh people were left out of the updated Assam Citizen List published on July 30 last year. Nearly 36 lakh people then applied again for inclusion in the list.
