Amid contradictory court orders on beef ban in J&K, Mufti govt moves SC

The Mufti Mohammed Sayeed-led government in J&K is at sea regarding two contradictory High Court rulings on the killing of bovines in the state.

The Supreme court, which was approached by the state government on the matter, will hear the plea on 5 October.

In an absurd turn of events, while on the one hand the Jammu bench of the J&K High court ordered a ban on the sale of beef, the Srinagar bench scrapped the law banning the slaughter of bovines.

"The SC should ensure that there is uniformity and consistency in judicial pronouncements and that there is no scope to exploit the present situation by disrupting communal harmony, amity and peace in the state and thereby alienating people of the state from the national mainstream," the state government's petition said.
