Punjab Congress Committee (PCC) chief Captain Amarinder Singh resigned from the post of MP of Lok Sobha on 10 November after the Supreme Court deemed the Punjab Termination of Agreement Act, 2004 on Sutlej Yamuna canal (SYL canal) as being invalid.
According to a ANI report, all Punjab Congress MLAs have also resigned from their post as a mark of protest against the Supreme Court verdict on the SYL row.
The apex court ruled that Punjab cannot unilaterally wriggle out of an agreement involving other states. It said that the legislation passed by the Punjab government is null and void in the issue.

The case, which involves Punjab, Rajasthan, Delhi, Himachal Pradesh, Jammu and Kashmir, and Chandigarh, also involves the sharing of the Ravi-Beas river waters primarily between Punjab and Haryana, reported NDTV.
The Sutlej Yamuna canal came into being for the sharing of Ravi and Beas river waters after Haryana was carved out of Punjab in 1966. However, Punjab has been regularly opposing it, saying that its agriculture will suffer.
