So you think you can Theyyam? A glimpse at the Keralite ritual

Theyyam worship rituals are part of a several thousand year-old tradition celebrated in Kerala.

The ritual incorporates dance, mime and music to invoke an ancient tribal tradition.

Of the over 400 Theyyams performed, the most spectacular ones are those of Raktha Chamundi, Kari Chamundi, Muchilottu Bhagavathi, Wayanadu Kulaven, Gulikan and Pottan.

Theyyam artists get their face painted before performing during the Kummati Kali as a part of annual Onam festival celebrations in Thrissur district of South Kerala.

During the festival, Kummati Kali performers move from house to house collecting small gifts and entertaining people.

The costumes are the most interesting facet ofKummati Kali. The dancers wear colourful masks depicting faces of Krishna, Narda, Kiratha, Darika.

The headgear and other ornamental decorations are spectacular in sheer size and appearance, full of vibrant colours.
