A man was killed and four of his kin - including his nine-year-old niece - left severely injured on 1 July after a speeding car hit their vehicle in Hyderabad's Banjara Hills area.

The incident occurred when an i10 car - allegedly driven by a drunk 20-year-old student - hit the Santro in which the family was travelling.

The deceased has been identified as Rajesh. The injured have been identified as Rajesh's niece Ramya - who is currently on ventilator support in a Hyderabad hospital - her mother, Radhika and another uncle and grandfather - who have suffered multiple fractures. Ramya is suffering from internal bleeding but is not in a condition to undergo an essential operation, NDTV reported.

The family was on their way home on Friday after picking up Ramya from her new school.

The i10 was allegedly driven by an engineering student named Shravil, who has been arrested.

Police told NDTV that a case of "culpable homicide" has been filed against Shravil. The police also said that the accused did not have a driving licence and that the i10 belonged to the father of one of his friends, Ashwin.
