Oscars 2016: 6 of the best Academy Awards acceptance speeches ever

The four words, "The Oscar goes to" are usually followed by tears, hugs, beaming smiles, congratulatory kisses and messages. Oh and the winner is usually overwhelmed by the moment as the take the stage to accept the award. And don't we all just love that? One of the many reasons why the Academy Awards is so keenly followed is the climax, watching the winner take the stage.

The heartfelt acceptance speeches, the antics that follow. Television gold indeed. The Academy and all its follwoers have witnessed a number of acceptance speeches over the years. While some are monotonous and irritating, others are exceptionally warm and hilarious.

With the Oscars just few hours away, we picked out some of the best acceptance speeches the award ceremony has seen over the years.

1. Tom Hanks

Tom Hanks made his first trip to the podium when he won the Oscar for his leading role in the 1993 film,Philadelphia where he played a gay man dying of AIDS. The lines "the streets of heaven are too crowded with angels. We know their names.", totally gave us the feels. Watch his speech here:

2. Sandra Bullock

Sandra Bullock's acceptance speech game was on point. She was straightforward, classic and out-and-out humorous. The audience gave her a standing ovation as she was declared as the winner in her very first nomination for her role in The Blind Side. Her special mention to Meryl Streep being a good kisser amused the listeners. One cannot help but smile throughout her speech.

3. Cuba Gooding Jr

Cuba Gooding Jr's acceptance speech for the award for the Best Supporting Actor for Jerry Maguire was the stuff of dreams. A beaming Cuba told the producers of The Academy Awards that they could cut him off if he crossed his stipulated time limit. However, Gooding continued to thank everyone and shout "I Love You" to everyone in the audience even when they played the walk-away music. He was so thrilled that he kept the trophy on the floor and jumped with joy.

4. Meryl Streep

How can you not love Meryl Streep? When she won the Oscar for the third time, she said, "Oh common, When they called my name I had this feeling, I could hear half of America going Oh no! Why her again..but Whatever".

5. Robin Williams

Robin Williams took everyone on a trip down the nostalgia lane with his soulful speech. He started by saying, "Oh man, this might be the one time I am speechless". His speech will make you miss him instantly.

6. Julia Roberts

Julia Roberts had a rockstar moment when she bagged The Best Actress award for Erin Brokovich. This might just be one of the longest speeches in the Oscar history. The actress seemed to have no plans to leave the stage anytime soon and the lady made that clear to everyone. However, the fact that she made the entire thing so endearing made everyone adore her.
