Short of cash on Dhanteras? These 7 items under Rs 100 will keep Goddess Lakshmi happy

So while the whole world is making a beeline for gold, silver, money bonds and their cousins, you're yet to get your salary. While you stare at a fast depleting cash-stash, buying something expensive is out of the question. But then again, it is Dhanteras. So what does one do?

Simple. One harks back to what parents always said.

Which is, that 'Dhan' means wealth and 'teras' is the 13th day of the moon cycle. That it is the festival of wealth (more like spending wealth!) where one worships Goddess Lakshmi (God of wealth and prosperity) and Yama Dev (God of Death). And that one has to buy metals, to ensure happiness, prosperity, good luck and wealth for the entire family through the year. (So much pressure!)

With so much riding on one day, we can't afford to make Goddess Lakshmi unhappy!

But then salary woes. Hah!

Keeping all the above in mind, here's a list of items that will keep both Goddess Lakshmi and your pocket happy. Presenting seven items you can buy under Rs 100 on Dhanteras 2016:

1. Utensils

This is a sure-shot, economical and easiest thing to do today. Just walk up to the nearest utensil store. You'll find several items that suits your budget, such as spoons, tumbler, plate, small saucepan, tiffin box, etc. Just ensure that whatever you buy has metal such as steel or brass or copper in it. However, do brace yourself for the crowds thronging the neighbourhood utensil shop today.

If you want to escape that utensil shop, just walk up to the nearest supermarket or department store and pick up a set of knife and vegetable peeler. Sorted.

2. Metal jewellery

Silver and gold are great. But not everything! A nice pair of earrings, or a ring, or a little necklace or bracelet made of metal will do just as well too. Keep yourself pretty with little trinkets that can come in handy with an outfit later.

3. Gas Lighter

Another easy item to pick-up this Dhanteras is a metallic gas lighter - the one we use to light our stoves. It's quite useful and an easy-to-get item.

4. Diya / Candle holders

The little metal diyas or candle holders can be easily found during Diwali in local markets. This metal diya or candle holder can double up as a Dhanteras purchase that you can use for Diwali as well.

5. Metal Hardware

Ok, this is the most unlikely advice you'll get for today. But shouldn't hardware, made of metal count on Dhanteras? Going by the definition in the books, it does count. So pick up a small hammer, screw-driver or nails from the closest hardware store.

6. Metallic stationery

By metallic stationery, we mean pens made of metal. Walk up to your nearest stationary store and you'll be amazed to see how many pens are made of metal. And while we're at it, a sharpener and clipboard also counts. Also, with this purchase, you'll keep both Goddess Lakshmi and her sister Goddess Saraswati happy. Yes, we rock that way.

7. Lock & key

If none of the above works, just buy a lock and key from somewhere. You might just need it someday.

At the end of the day, this is a day to boost our trade and economy. So, quit being superstitious and buy something practical.
