Delhi traffic: 23 choke points and how to decongest them

One of the most gruelling problems which the national capital has not been able to resolve, even after years of planning and restructuring, is its traffic congestion. Considering the escalating chaos in the city, a high-powered committee of the Ministry of Urban Development has developed a proposal to deal with the gridlocked roads in Delhi.

Here are 23 of the 44 choke points which have been identified in the draft proposal of the committee and the measures listed to unclog the same.

Choke point 1: Hauz Khas Station, near Panchsheel Flyover

Solution: Multi-nodal integration, creation of space for TSR/gramin sewa halting points, pick and drop points for private vehicles and shift bus stand.

Choke point 2: Gurgaon road-RR Hospital

Solution: Create additional lane in the carraigeway towards Dhaula Kua and construct flyover or underpass at Gurgaon Road or Station road crossing.

Choke point 3: Ashram chowk- Maharani Bagh

Solution: Decongestin plan for CV Raman Marg

Choke point 4: Saket metro station

Solution: Multi-modal integration. Creation of space for TSR/ gramin sewa halting points, pick and drop points for private vehicles, shifting bus stand and removal of encroachments.

Choke point 5: Khanpur T-point

Solution: Widen Mehrauli-Badarpur Road by acquiring space and removing encroachment and shift bus stand.

Choke point 6: RTR-MotiBagh

Solution: Parallel flyover, alternative route or access to NH-8 (above Mahipalpur flyover) through Nelson Madela Marg/ Mehrauli -Mahipalpur Road.

Choke point 7: Lajpat Nagar Market

Solution: One-way scheme, parking over covered drain on Feroz Gandhi Marg by construction of ramp; permanent central verge on Shiv Mandir Road and Veer Savarkar Road.

Choke point 8: INA Market

Solution: Redevelop market and create parking space.

Choke point 9: Adchini T-point

Solution: Construct slip road through vacant piece of land from Aurobindo Marg to Shaheed Jeet Singh Marg.

Choke point 10: Malviya Nagar- Aurobindo Marg T-Point

Solution: Construct slip road from Aurobindo Marg to Press Enclave Road.

Choke point 11: Aurobindo Marg-Anuvrat Marg T-Point

Solution: Slip road through DDA land, connecting Aurobindo Marg to Anuvrat Marg.

Choke point 12: Under Mahipalpur Flyover

Solution: Widen Road by removing encroachment, solution for pedestrain crossing and extra space for bus stand.

Choke point 13: Rangpuri Roundabout

Solution: Construct two-way underpass near Shiv Murti for traffic coming from Dwarka and going towards Gurgoan and vice-versa.

Choke point 14: CR Park Area

Solution: Shift gas godown on Outer Ring Road.

Choke point 15: Kalindi Kunj 

Solution: Widen the Kalindi Bridge.

Choke point 16: Chhatarpur Area-Bhati Mines

Solution: Widen road near y-point, remove encroachments.

Choke point 17: ITO Crossing A-Point

Solution: Bypass roads, alternative routes requires, construct tunnel/ underpass below railway line to connect Tansen Marg with DDU Marg. Tunnel below Pragati Maidan to connect Bhagwan Das Road with Ring Road.

Choke point 18: W-Point Tilak Marg

Solution: Bypass roads, alternative routes requires.

Choke point 19: Kemal Ataturk Marg

Solution: Wide road, construct alternative route connecting Vinay Marg with Aurobindo Marg (elevated corridor possible).

Choke point 20: Sarojini Nagr Market

Solution: Policy for use of multi-level parking.

Choke point 21: Kamal T-Point

Solution: Design improvement for Military road merging with New Rohtak Road, relocate bus stands, construct pedestrian corridor.

Choke point 22: Karol Bagh Market Area-bhati

Solution: Construct multi-level parking, effective policy for surface parking, proper vendor's policy.

Choke point 23: Patel Road

Solution: Relocate/Shift bus stand of Shadipur Metro station, construct footpath on Shadipur Flyover, rationalisation of cuts on main road, parking space or Shadi Khampur village/Rajit Nagar Market.
