Delhi Police, on 6 November, arrested Aam Admi Party MLA Kirari Rituraj Govind on charges of assault during Chhath Puja celebration.

Govind allegedly caused a ruckus and violated prohibitory orders at a Chhath Ghat in Aman Vihar during celebrations on Saturday.

According to media reports, he was detained by police while trying to build a ghat on a heritage site along the Yamuna bank for Chhath Puja. Devotees use the Yamuna bank to offer prayers to the Sun and take dips in river or pond water.

When villagers objected to the building of the ghat, there was stone pelting in the area.

According to a report in The Hindu, police had invoked section 144 of the Criminal Procedure Code at the Ghat to prevent a crowd from gathering during the Chhath celebrations.
