Rohit Sharma and Mayank Agarwal breaks 15-year-old record set by Sehwag-Gambhir

India’s new Test opener Rohit Sharma along with Mayank Agarwal broke the 15 year old milestone set by Virender Sehwag and Gautam Gambhir at Dr. YS. Rajasekhara Reddy Cricket Satdium in Vizag. The previous record was set on 20th November, 2004.

This was the third double hundred partnership by an Indian openers against South Africa. The third highest partnership is owned by Wasin Jaffer and Virender Singh on 26th March 2008 in Chennai.


Nevertheless, this is the first time that both the openers have went on to score a century against South Africa. Mayank Agarwal knocked his first Test hundred and went on to become 86th Indian player to do so. This was also the highest partnership for any wicket against the Proteas.

The new Indian opening pair also came close to surpassing a 71 year old milestone which was set by England’s Len Hutton and Cyril Washbrook against South Africa, where they knocked 359 runs on 24th December 1948. the partnership between Mayank and Rohit of 317 runs is the second highest partnership against South Africa.

During the match, South Africa missed two chances to dismiss Rohit Sharma. First Rohit Sharma was dropped by wicket keeper Quinton de Kock and later, the South Africans missed a runout chance after a mix-up between Rohit and Mayank. Rohit Sharma was later dismissed in the 82 over by Keshav Maharaj.
