India-born Jeet Raval picked by New Zealand for Africa tour

Indian-born opening batsman Jeet Raval has been named in New Zealand's squad for the upcoming four-Test tour of Zimbabwe and South Africa.

The 27-year-old was the only uncapped player named in the 16-man New Zealand squad, which also includes Indian-born spinner Ish Sodhi, who was recalled to the national team after two years.

Raval was a junior player in India before moving to New Zealand in 2004. He displayed a rich vein of form, averaging 43.85 in first-class cricket, Sport24 reported.

The inclusion of Raval has threatened the opening spot of Martin Guptill and Tom Latham, who have not been at their best against the new ball in the five-day format.

The Kane Williamson-led side will fly to Zimbabwe for a two-Test series starting on July 29 before visiting South Africa for another two-match series beginning on August 19.

New Zealand squad: Kane Williamson (c), Trent Boult, Doug Bracewell, Mark Craig, Martin Guptill, Matt Henry, Tom Latham, Henry Nicholls, Luke Ronchi, Jeet Raval, Mitchell Santner, Ish Sodhi, Tim Southee, Ross Taylor, Neil Wagner, BJ Watling.
