From Randeep Hooda to Priyanka Chopra -- 10 Bollywood actors who went through extreme makeovers

From going bald to putting on weight, actors work very hard to get into the skin of their characters. Their efforts are so intense sometimes, that even their fans fail to recognise their on-screen looks.

The latest actor making news for his new look in his upcoming film is Vir Das. The actor is currently working on a biopic titled 31st October which is about the 1984 anti-Sikh riots. To play the character of a 65-year-old Sikh man Davinder Singh, Das used to spend six hours every day for a ten-day shoot on makeup; three hours to put on the necessary makeup and three hours to remove it.

However, this is not the first time that an actor has gone to extreme lengths in order to get to the look of his character right. Check out 10 times actors who donned completely unrecognisable avatars for their roles:

1. Randeep Hooda - Sarbjit

The actor is playing the titular role in the biopic, along with Aishwarya Rai Bachchan. As reported by TOI, Randeep had to lose 18 kgs in 28 days to fit into the character. The actor was kept on a near-starvation diet to look like real-life Sarbjit who was kept in a 4 x 4 rat-infested room.

The report also quotes director Omung Kumar saying that nobody could recognise Randeep when he entered the sets and it was only when he called out his name that he was aware of Hooda's presence.

2. Shah Rukh Khan - Fan

King Khan is playing an obsessed fan named Gaurav in this YRF entertainer. YRF hired three-time Oscar-winning makeup artist Greg Cannom to transform SRK into Gaurav. The artist was responsible for Priyanka Chopra's makeup in 2011 Bollywood film Saat Khoon Maaf as well.

3. Rishi Kapoor - Kapoor & Sons

The actor is playing an 85-year-old grouchy bully in the film. And reportedly, the makers spent Rs 1.5 crore for his look in the film. The veteran actor himself referred Greg Cannom for the same as he explained:

"When Karan ( Johar) and the director Shakun ( Batra) came to meet me, I suggested that they take Cannom because I had heard of him. I was not sure about this suggestion being agreed upon since it would be a costly affair, but Karan agreed even though he knew that this would cost him around Rs 1.5 to Rs 1.75 crore."

4. Amitabh Bachchan - Paa

The megastar of Bollywood had to play a child suffering from a rare disease -- Progeria. For the same, the actor had to spend five hours every day to wear the prosthetics designed by Hollywood artist Christien Tinsley and Dominie Till.

As director R Balki himself explained: "They first created a mould of Amitabh Bachchan by pouring rubber solution on him. Then they made the skin with latex and painted veins on that. Making the mold is a one-time process but the skin had to be painted everyday. That takes about four-five hours. Doing that make-up was a nightmare but Amitabh did it without any complaints."

5. Kangana Ranaut - Tanu Weds Manu Returns

The actress played two characters in the movie -- Tanu Sharma and Kusum Sangwan. For her Haryanvi character, the actor actually went the no makeup road and also put on a different set of teeth. A local Haryanvi accent and some bindass swag later, Kangana Ranaut was rocking it as fearless Kusum in Tanu Weds Manu Returns.

6. Hrithik Roshan - Dhoom 2

He played a con character in the film and while he owned the look with that chiseled body, Hrithik's transformation into a variety of characters made the character even more popular.

7. Kamal Haasan - Chachi 420

The actor's first directorial film portrayed him as the famous chachi. And Kamal Haasan had to carry a Maharashtrian woman look for the film. It was not the first time that an actor portrayed himself as a woman on screen but Haasan's character surely made him the most adorable chachi on screen.

8. Vikram - I

The 2014 Tamil romantic thriller featured South star Vikram in the lead role, playing a character who suffers from a rare and incurable genetic disease which results in premature ageing. The actor went bald for the film and the role also required him to sport boil-riddled skin which was designed by New Zealand-based Weta Workshop.

9. Priyanka Chopra - What's Your Rashee

The actor had to portray 12 characters on screen and therefore, had to carry off 12 different looks. She was considered for Guinness World Records as the first actress to play 12 different characters in one film.

10. Riteish Deshmukh - Apna Sapna Money Money

The comedy film featured Riteish Deshmukh as Kishan, who's always looking out for an opportunity to make a quick buck. And for the same, he disguised himself as Sunaina, a colourful 'aunty'.
