When Ajay Devgn announced the sequel to Son of Sardar long ago, and booked Diwali 2017 for its release, people naturally assumed that the sequel would be an action comedy just like the original.

But films associated with a franchise name need not be on the same lines as each other. So Ajay's sequel, titled Sons of Sardaar, will be a serious drama, based on the famous Battle of Saragarhi which was fought in 1897.

In the battle, 21 Sikhs of the fourth battalion of the Sikh Regiment gave up their lives fighting against 10,000 Afghans. The battle took place in the North-West Frontier Province which was part of British India. It is now named Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa and is part of Pakistan. The battle is considered one of history's great last stands and Sikh community in India celebrate 12 September as Saragarhi Day.

In Sons of Sardaar, Ajay plays Havildar Ishar Singh, who led the contingent. He will also produce the film, which he plans to shoot based on international standards in terms of scale and technology.

The actor is talking with some well-known directors and will officially announce the film's director soon. Currently, he is busy with Baadshaho, after which he starts shooting for his dream project, Shivaay, in Bulgaria. Sons of Sardaar will go on floors in July 2016 and hit the screens on Diwali 2017.
