With a soaring rise in onion prices, the vegetable is increasingly becoming a precious possession, one to be closely guarded.

Hindustan Times has reported that in Hyderabad, people have to wait in long queues along with their identity cards under tight security and CCTV surveillance for getting their onions.

That's right.

Not only this, the traders also have to get their finger inked after completing the transaction. 5 Saal Onion Raj?

Why the security?

The Telangana government is so cautious because recently in Maharashtra, there have been two cases of large-scale onion thefts with onion stashes as large as 2000 kg and 700 kg being stolen.

The government is also planning to limit the sale of subsidised onion to only one kilogram per ration card holder.

The state governments of Andhra Pradesh and Telangana began the sale of subsidized onions as a response to the steep increase in prices.
