How did this happen?

According to the cops, some members were wishing the complainant on his birthday over the WhatsApp group and had therefore changed the subject line to his name.

"One of the accused students, however, changed the subject line, which irked the complainant's friend Dinkar and he objected to it that led to a dispute between them," a police inspector attached to Deccan Gymkhana police station said.

"When they confronted each other the next day in college, the accused student along with his other friends attacked the complainant and his other four friends in which Dinkar sustained grave injuries as he was attacked with a wooden object and weapons," he said. He added that Dinkar is recuperating at a private hospital.

"We have registered a case against 22 youths and arrested five under relevant sections of IPC," the inspector said. Further probe is on.
