The Aadhaar card issued by the Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) is an important proof of identity and address for the residents of India, including minor children. The 12-digit Aadhaar number is also needed for enjoying various facilities and subsidies offered by the Government of India. Considering the importance it holds in our life, it is necessary to be aware of the process to apply for an Aadhaar card and also, update it online, in case any changes are needed to be made in the given details.

How to Apply For Aadhaar Card

Applying for an Aadhaar is not a tedious task. Numerous enrolment centres and designated banks and post offices have been given the task of helping you in Aadhaar registration. The government has also taken numerous steps to make its use safe and secure. Here is a guide for you to apply for an Aadhaar card.

No Online Application Option for Aadhaar

The first thing you should understand and be clear about is the fact that you cannot get an Aadhaar online or even apply for it online. To apply for an Aadhaar, you have to visit the enrolment centre or the designated banks and post offices in the area, and carry the enrolment form and the supporting documents. You can visit the official website of the Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) https://uidai.gov.in to locate the enrolment and update centres in the area.

Getting the Enrolment Form

To apply for an Aadhaar, you need to submit the duly filled in enrolment form along with the required documents at the enrolment centre. One can procure the form available at the enrolment centre and the designated banks and post offices. However, you also have the option of saving time by taking the filled-in form to the centre. For this, you need to download the form available on the official website of the UIDAI https://uidai.gov.in and then fill in the required details in the printout of the form. To get the form, click ‘Resources’ on home page, and then click ‘Download Forms’ under Enrolment Documents.

Check the Supporting Documents Needed

While submitting the form, you need to include the documents as proof of identity and address. The official website of the UIDAI has given a list of the supporting documents for this purpose.

Formalities to be Done at Enrolment Centre

On reaching the enrolment centre with the form and the required documents, the usual practice is to wait for your turn to get the work done, as the service is on the basis of first come, first served. Once the form and the documents are submitted, they are verified by the official present there.

Next, the biometrics of the individual are taken - iris scan and fingerprints of all the 10 fingers. In case of children below 5 years of age, the iris scan is not required. After verification of the documents, you get an acknowledgment slip that carries the applicant’s enrolment number. You should keep this safely till you are issued the Aadhaar number.

Getting an Aadhaar Card

Once all the needful is done, you will get the Aadhaar card by post at the mentioned address. This can take around 60-95 days, so you can check the status by using the enrolment number on the UIDAI website. Click ‘Check Aadhaar status’ and enter the enrolment number. On submitting a security code, and clicking ‘Check Status’, you can know the status of the Aadhaar.

Once the Aadhaar number is generated, you can even download an e-Aadhaar from the UIDAI website with the help of the enrolment number. An online copy is as good as the hard copy.

Once the Aadhaar card is issued, it is very much possible that you spot a mistake in the personal details. People keep relocating from one place to another and then the address and the mobile number might have to be updated. In such a situation, you need to apply for corrections by using the correction form available at the centre and on the UIDAI website https://uidai.gov.in. The only change that can be done online is in the address; for all other changes, including mobile number and date of birth, you need to visit the enrolment centre.

Updating Address in Aadhaar Card

To online update your address in the Aadhaar card, you need to log on to the UIDAI website.

One you log in, click ‘Address Update Request (Online)’, to get to the next page. Here, at the bottom, click ‘Proceed’ once you have read the instructions.
