Social media was abuzz with the news of the arrest of Aceh Governor Irwandi Yusuf on Tuesday evening, netizens are continuously asking if the former “freedom fighter” would be punished under sharia which chops off hands for corruption charges.

One of the Twitter users wrote, What is the punishment for stealing in Islamic sharia law? According to Islamic law, theft is punishable by amputating a hand. So, now Twitter user asked if Irwandi’s hand will be cut off? Well, no as Sharia law isn't applicable to complete Aceh.

Aceh covers a few crimes like zina (adultery and premarital sex), liwath (male homosexuality), musahaqah (female homosexuality) and qadzaf (false accusations of adultery). Besides, the province also has the Criminal Code (KUHP) as the law of the land. Any non-Muslims can discreetly choose between criminal code and sharia law.

There is no punishment for corruption or theft under sharia in Aceh, so this will be fall under KUHP or the 2001 Corruption Law.
