See: How Hurricane Matthew devastated Haiti, Bahamas and Florida

After lashing Haiti, Hurricane Matthews, now downgraded to Category 3, is heading directly for Florida. It is nearing the Florida Space Coast with "dangerous storm surge, destructive winds and flooding rainfall stretching into Georgia and South Carolina by the weekend," reports The Weather Channel.

For the past several hours, tropical storm force winds have already been impacting the east coast of Florida. Wind gusts as high as 74 mph have hit the Bay area. "The eyewall may deliver the strongest, most destructive winds anyone in parts of the northeast and east-central Florida coast has seen in their lifetime," continues The Weather Channel.

Haiti has born the brunt of the hurricane. The death toll rose above 330 as of Thursday night and more than 3,200 homes have been destroyed. Winds were as high as 145mph winds that brought torrential rain along with it.

Hurricane Matthew is on course to become "the first major hurricane threatening a direct hit on the United States in more than 10 years," according to The Guardian
