Former French President, Nicolas Sarkozy investigated for the first time over campaign funding

Former France's rightwing President, Nicolas Sarkozy who ruled from 2007-2012, was in police custody for questioning over charges of receiving millions of euros for election campaign from the late Libyan dictator Muammar Gaddafi.

On Tuesday, he was detained in the custody for questioning by a magistrate in charge of this 2007 case. A probe in this matter has continued for five years but this is the first time that Sarkozy has been questioned specifically about Gadhafi.

The year 2007 campaign investigation has claimed that the late dictator, Gaddafi's gave Sarkozy Euro 50 million. This funding violets French rule which allows only Euro 21 million.

Later, in April 2012, a report was published, which clearly stated that a payment of Euro 50m was released in support of Sarkozy’s election campaign.
