Swami Vivekananda birth anniversary: Lesser-known facts about the monk

The national on Sunday is celebrating National Youth Day on the even of 157th birth anniversary of Swami Vivekananda. The great Indian monk had introduced Indian philosophies of Vedanta and yoga to the western world.

He was born on January 12, 1863 in Calcutta. His name was Narendranath Dutt in childhood. Swami Vivekananda's birthday is also observed as National Youth Day in the country. He was the founder of the Ramakrishna Math and the Ramakrishna Mission.


 

Here are some lesser-known facts about Swami Vivekananda:

According to some books written on the monk, Swami Vivekananda suffered from 31 ailments.

  • He had suffered insomnia, liver and Kidney disease, malaria, migraine, diabetes, and heart ailments as some of the 31 health problems.
  • He used to emphasize greatly on physical strength.
  • Swami Vivekananda had undergone different modes of treatment ranging from allopathic, homeopathic to ayurvedic and had also taken advice from all kinds of quasi-medical experts from various countries.
  • At a very young age, he had fallen ill due to lack of food.
  • Swami Vivekananda had 46 percent in the Intermediate Arts and scored 47 per cent at university entrance level examination.
  • Throughout, he had never been spiritual and doubted the existence of God.
  • In a meeting with Sri Ramakrishna, he had asked him directly if he had seen God.

 Swami Vivekananda, whose speeches, books, and sayings are inspiring the youths even today had died on July 4, 1902.
