The Digambar jain community is dumfounded in Rajasthan after the arrest of a jain monk who is accused of raping a pregnant women and molesting others.

The Karauli police have taken the monk Sukumal Nandi (38) into custody, for allegedly raping a pregnant woman. He has been sent for 2 weeks of judicial custody.

At present, he has been kept in isolation ward in a hospital and will be moved to Bharatpur prison after reports of his coronavirus test comes.

Superintendent of Police, Anil Kumar told that they assested the monk after complainants confirmed the charges levelled against Nandi before the magistrate.

A youth filed a complaint with police that his wife, sister-in-law and mother went to seek blessings of the Jain muni staying at Naveen Upashrary — a Jain shelter home in Hindaun.

The monk told his sister-in-law to follow him to the upper floor and take a coconut as a prasad.

But he allegedly molested her after which she came out.

After that, the youth's pregnant wife went for his blessings where he raped her, after threatening to curse her and her unborn.

When she didn’t come back for a while, the sister-in-law went upstairs and got the door of the room opened. She was frightened to see the pregnant woman lying in pain with tears in her eyes.

Police immediately went in for the medical examination and inspected the crime scene and arrested the suspect.

Police arrested him after the women recorded their statements before the magistrate.

The medical report of the pregnant woman is awaited. The forensic report of the garments used during the crime is also awaited.

Police asked Sukamal to put on his clothes which is against the religious custom. Police searched his room and car in presence of representatives of Jain sect and recovered condoms, mobile phones, pen drive, tablet camera, ATM cards, hard drives, laptops, and stamp papers.

Seized items have been sent for forensic and only after the report comes, he would be able to reveal what the pen drives, laptops, etc had in it. Some of these items were hidden in compartments built in his car.

Further investigations are underway to verify allegations that in the past, too, he had faced charges of molesting women but the community hid the matter.
