In an abhorrent incident of crime coming in from Mumbai, police have taken a 40-year-old man, physiotherapist by profession, into their custody for allegedly raping a 16-year-old physically challenged girl at his clinic in Santacruz, police said on Wednesday.

The accused, who was taken into police custody on Thursday, had allegedly been sexually assaulting the girl, suffering from speech impairment and other physical disabilities, for over a year, police said.

The shocking misdeed became known on Tuesday when the girl sent a message from her phone to her parents, telling them about the episode. Her parents registered a police complaint on Thursday and the girl also told the cops about her horrifying experience, the polce said.

In the time of investigation, the police discovered that the accused allegedly used to rape the girl whenever she came to his clinic. The victim’s parents always stayed outside the physiotherapist's cabin and thus, were oblivious about the horrific act, the official stated. It is suspected that the accused carried out similar offence on other kids too, police said.

Subsequent to the police complaint by the victim’s family, the cops took the accused into their custody and lodged a case against him under many sections of the Indian Penal Code (IPC). The charges pressed against the accused were 376 (rape), and provisions of the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act, the police said.

Later, the accused physiotherapist was presented before a local court and was remanded in police custody for seven days, police added.
