Akhilesh Yadav flags off Lucknow's first Metro

Come 26 March, 2017, Lucknowites will have a Metro at their service. 23 kilometres-long, running north to south of the city, the Lucknow Metro will have 21 stations.

Chief Minister Akhilesh Yadav flagged off the Metro\'s trail run to Charbagh station, a distance of 8.5 kilometres, at the Transport Nagar Metro depot. His father, Mulayam Singh Yadav, was also present in the ceremony.

The estimated cost of this ambitious project is around Rs 6,800 crores and is being called one of the biggest success stories of the Samajwadi Party (SP) government.

Addressing the gathering at the flag-off event, Akhilesh said, "The Metro was not in our manifesto but we initiated the project. The work for the same has been started in Ghaziabad, between Greater Noida and Noida and also in Kanpur. If we come in power again, we will start work in Varanasi too."
