History of Janmashtami:

Lord Krishna was the eighth incarnation of Lord Vishnu. He was born on the eighth day of the dark fortnight in the Bhadrapada month in Mathura, ruled by the evil King Kansa, whose sister, Princess Devaki gave birth to Krishna.

Devaki and Vasudeva were married with a lot of fanfare, however, a prophecy said that the eighth child of the couple would cause Kansa’s downfall. In order to save their son, Vasudeva took him to Vrindavan by crossing the river, where he was brought up by Yasoda and Nanda.
