Rohit Sharma becomes third fastest batsman to score 9,000 ODI runs, leapfrogs Sachin Tendulkar, Sourav Ganguly

Indian opener Rohit Sharma has gone on to become the third fastest batsman to arrive at 9,000 ODI runs mark during the series deciding third match against Australia on Sunday.

The 32-year-old needed just four runs to get to the milestone and the Indian opener got to it in the final delivery of the first over of India’s innings to sit behind Virat Kohli and AB de Villiers.

Virat Kohli accomplished the feat in 194 innings and he is followed by South Africa’s AB de Villiers (205 innings).

Rohit Sharma (216 innings) leapfrogged batting legend Sourav Ganguly (228 innings), Sachin Tendulkar (235 innings) and Brian Lara (239 innings) to the milestone.

The three match series is tied at 1-1 and here the Australia rode Steve Smith's 131 to put up 286/9 in 50 overs after winning the toss and electing to bat first.

In response, Indian opened with K.L. Rahul and Rohit after Shikhar Dhawan had to be taken for an x-ray. Dhawan was taken off the field after he injured his shoulder in the series-deciding match after he dived to save an Aaron Finch shot in the cover region before hurting his left shoulder in the fifth over.
