83-year-old PMC bank account holder dies after he fails to withdraw amount for treatment

An 83-year-old account holder of fraud-hit Punjab and Maharashtra Co-operative (PMC) Bank died in Mulund on Friday after he failed to raise funds for his heart surgery. As per the reports of HT, Murlidhar Dharra had deposited Rs 80 lakh in the fraud bank.

His family alleged that they were unable to withdraw the required amount from PMC due to the transaction limit imposed by the Reserve Bank of India (RBI).

As per the media reports, this is the fourth death case of the PMC account holder who has passed away due to the restrictions were imposed in September 2019.

According to the new rules of RBI, depositors can withdraw more than the restricted amount in case of emergencies only. Meanwhile, the daily withdrawals are currently capped at Rs 40,000.

Another such case was reported on October 14, when ex-Jet Airways staffer Sanjay Gulati was also passed away after suffering a cardiac arrest. His family has alleged that Gulati was suffering from stress due to the withdrawal restrictions at the bank since he needed cash for his son’s treatment.

Dharra passed away due to cardiac arrest in his home in Mulund on Friday. His son told PTI that doctors had recommended his father to undergo surgery for a heart condition, but the family was failed to raise the funds despite the deposition of Rs 80 lakh in PMC Bank.

Notably, RBI had imposed the restrictions on September 23 on withdrawals from PMC bank. The withdrawal limit was Rs 40,000. In case of a medical emergency, the limit can be extended. It is unknown that the bank has received the application of Dharra or not.
