Railway fare hike: Train tickets to become costly from today, check revised rate

Traveling in trains has become costlier from today as the Railways on Tuesday announced a hike in ticket price across its network from January 1. The fare hike will be implemented in various categories of the services provided by the Railway department.

This apart, the Railways also announced a two paise per km hike in fares of mail or express non-AC trains and four paise per km hike in the fares of AC classes.

Moreover, premium trains, including Shatabdi, Rajdhani, and Duronto trains are included in the fare hike list.

According to a statement released by the Railway Ministry, there has been a steady up-gradation and expansion of amenities, both off-board, and on-board.

The Indian Railways has continuously endeavored to augment passenger experience through the modernization of coaches and the provision of improved facilities over stations.

"In order to expand passenger amenities and facilities at various railway stations and trains, it has become imperative to increase the fare marginally without overburdening any class of passengers. Fast modernization of Indian Railway will be achieved through this fare revision," the statement reads.

Accordingly, Railways has decided to marginally affect an increase in fare only over the non-suburban sections. Keeping the affordability concerns of daily commuters, there shall be no fare hike for passengers over suburban sections and season ticket holders. This class constitutes 66 percent of the total passenger segment over Indian railways.
