‘He’s anti-national, anti-Hindu; has no knowledge of history’: Assam CM on Rahul’s Savarkar remark

Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma reacted to Congress leader Rahul Gandhi’s remarks on Vinayak Damodar Savarkar on November 18. He slammed the Congress leader, claiming that Gandhi is ignorant of Indian history and that his words for the freedom fighter reveal his ideology.

“He is anti-national, anti-Hindu. People will take revenge about it,” he said.

Rahul Gandhi on November 17 said that Savarkar helped the British and wrote a mercy petition to them. While addressing a press conference during the Bharat Jodo Yatra in Maharashtra, the Congress leader showed a letter and claimed it was written by the freedom fighter to the British.

“I will read the last line, which says 'I beg to remain your most obedient servant' and is signed V D Savarkar,” Gandhi said.

The former Congress chief further said that he was of the view that Savarkar signed the letter out of fear and Mahatma Gandhi, Nehru, Sardar Patel, and other leaders of the freedom struggle.

Slamming Gandhi, Sarma said the Congress leader does not want to come to the poll-bound states. “Elections are in Gujarat but he (Rahul Gandhi) is wandering around in the South, when elections were in Himachal Pradesh he was in Kerala... he doesn't want to come out of the dressing room as he does not want to play,” said CM Biswa Sarma at Anjar District, Kutch.

The Assembly Elections in Gujarat will be conducted in two phases on December 1 and December 5, 2022. The results to the 182-member Gujarat assembly will be declared on December 8, 2022.

Notably, with its aggressive campaign, AAP is projecting itself as the main challenger to the BJP, while Congress is confident of a clean sweep across Gujarat.
