Watch: Clash breaks out between protesters and police; several injured

Several protesters and police personnel were injured after a protest rally turned violent in Manipur's Kangpokpi district on March 11. The protesters were demonstrating against the state government's decision to declare some parts of the state as protected areas.

Security forces had to use force to control and disperse the angry mob.

In the video, protesters could be seen pelting stones and other objects at the security forces. The security forces could also be seen dispersing the mob and using tear gas against them.

As per reports, section 144 of CrPC (ban on gatherings) is imposed in the area and when police tried to stop the protesters the clash broke out between them.

The protesters were demonstrating against the state government's alleged injustice towards the land rights of tribal people.

Recently, the Manipur Government declared some parts of the state, especially the hilly areas, as reserved forest areas. After the declaration, the state government allegedly began an eviction and demolition drive in those areas, during which several properties of locals were demolished. The locals alleged that the government began evicting people without making any arrangements for their rehabilitation and resettlement.

Yesterday, a protest rally, organised by the Kuki civil society under the banners of the Kuki Inpi Manipur, turned violent and security forces had to use strength to disperse the crowd.
