The holy festival of Hindus, Maha Shivratri is been observed as the 'great night of Lord Shiva', which comes once in a year, Lord Shiva is referred as 'the destroyer of evil.' This Festival is celebrated by worshipping Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati. This year, Maha Shivratri will be celebrated on February 13, Tuesday, and will be extended until February 14. Lord Shiva has 108 different names: Maheshwara, Shambhu, Soma, Shashvata, Parameshwara, and others.

According to a legend, Lord Shiva drank poisonous negativity to protect the world on Maha Shivaratri. while it is also said that on the Night of Maha Shivratri, Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati got married.

On Maha Shivratri, the devotees head to Shiva temples or Jyotirlingams to worship Lord Shiva. Some also do chanting of Shiva Mantra "Om Namah Shivaya", praying to Lord Shiva, keeping fast, practicing meditation.
