Coronavirus: Death toll climbs to 908; PM Modi writes to Chinese President Xi Jinping offering help

The death toll in China due to the novel coronavirus epidemic has gone up to 908 and the number of confirmed cases is over 40,000, as per China's National Health Commission report. On Sunday, there were 97 deaths and 3,062 new confirmed cases of lethal infection.

According to the latest report, 91 deaths were in Hubei province, the epicenter of the epidemic, two in Anhui, and one each in Heilongjiang, Jiangxi, Hainan, and Gansu.

A total of 908 people have died of the disease and 40,171 confirmed cases of the outbreak were reported in 31 provincial-level regions so far, it said.

On Sunday, as many as 3,281 patients have been discharged from hospital after recovery. So far, over 630 people, including 356 in Hubei, have been discharged, state-run Xinhua news agency quoted the commission as saying.

Meanwhile, Prime Minister Narendra Modi conveyed to Chinese President Xi Jinping India’s readiness to provide help. In a letter to President Xi, Pm Modi expressed solidarity with the president and the people of China over the outbreak of the novel virus.

According to sources, PM Modi offered India's assistance to China to face the challenge, besides conveying condolences at the unfortunate loss of lives due to the outbreak.

PM Modi has also conveyed to Xi Jinping his appreciation for facilitating the evacuation of around 650 Indian citizens from the Hubei province.

Earlier, India evacuated as many as 647 Indians and seven Maldivians from China on two special flights. The govt had also asked the citizens to refrain from traveling to China.
