CBI verdict: Arun Jaitley defends BJP's move in CBI matter after SC reinstated Alok Verma as director

The Supreme Court in its landmark verdict today, has set aside the governments arbitrary move in sending director Alok Verma on leave and has reinstated him as the full time director of the agency.

Although, after receiving flak from the Opposition and other activists, Finance Minister Arun Jaitley has defended the government saying that the Supreme Court’s verdict was a balanced one and that the government respects it and will follow it accordingly.

Jaitley said, “The government had sent the two senior officers of the CBI on leave on the recommendation of the CVC (Central Vigilance Commission). This action taken was perfectly bonafide as there were cross-allegations made by both the officers, and in accordance with recommendations of the CVC. The government felt that in the larger interest of fair and impartial investigation and credibility of CBI, the two officers must recuse themselves.”

He further added that “SC apparently has strengthened the immunity given to CBI director in larger interest of fair&impartial investigation. Therefore in accordance with direction of SC, orders will be complied with and the govt will act in the same manner.”

The Opposition has glared its attack over the government and its move to remove the CBI director and clipping his powers, wherein the CPM has said that “the government should quit over the Supreme Court’s verdict.”

Delhi CM Arvind Kejriwal has said “SC reinstating CBI director Alok Verma is a direct indictment of the PM. Modi govt has ruined all institutions and democracy in our country. Wasn't CBI director illegally removed at midnight to stall the probe in Rafale scam which directly leads to PM himself?”
