AAP MLA Raghav Chadha booked for allegedly defaming UP CM Yogi Adityanath

Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) legislator Raghav Chadha was on Sunday booked by the Noida sector 20 police for allegedly defaming Uttar Pradesh chief minister Yogi Adityanath in an offensive tweet after a complaint wa lodged by a Supreme Court lawyer.

Raghav Chadha had on Saturday put out a controversial tweet on the extensive migration of daily wagers moving back to their respective hometowns from the national capital, the tweet was later removed from Raghav Chadha’s social media handle.

However, a Supreme Court lawyer, Prashant Patel, lodged a complaint against the AAP leader.

“I sent an email to the commissioner and DGP after which the FIR was filed. The situation in Delhi is already one of panic. Such statements by these people will create more panic. Putting blame on someone in this manner is wrong. UP police is not beating anyone. If anything they have been very courteous with the public during the whole ordeal,” said Patel.

Huge number of migrant workers have been trying to cross state borders to reach to their native village due to loss of livelihood ever since PM Modi announced a nationwide lockdown in a bid to curb the spread of Covid-19.

In his complaint, Prashant Patel stated the Chadha’s bitter and intentional act is not only threatening to the maintenance of law and order but will also give way to panic among the citizens who are going to the villages at this difficult time. Hence, action must be taken against him.

After this AAP lawmaker was bookeed at the sector 20 police station under sections 500 (defamation), 505 (2) (promoting enmity hatred or ill-will between classes) and section 66 (offensive messages through computer or phone) of the IT Act.

While senior officials of Noida police could not be reached for a remark, the SHO of the sector 20 police station confirmed that an FIR has been filed.

“We will take necessary legal action following a thorough investigation,” said RK Singh, SHO.

Raghav Chadha did not comment on the allegations.
