Caught on cam: Train crashes into airplane just seconds after pilot rescued

A pilot was rescued from his crashed aircraft just seconds before a train smashes into the wreckage, petrifying clip displays. A Los Angeles police officer's body camera records police officers saving the injured pilot with just moments in hand.

"Go, go, go," someone was heard shouting as cops pulled the injured pilot out of the plane and away from the approaching train. Moments later, the camera shows the train slamming into the crashed plane.

As maintained by NPR, the aircraft crash took place on railway tracks that run parallel to the runway at Whiteman Airport in the Pacoima neighbourhood of Los Angeles, California.

The video was posted on social media by the LAPD on Sunday, where it has since gone viral with millions of views.

The viral clip has accumulated more than 3.4 million views on Twitter, along with hundreds of comments lauding the police for their swift actions.

The officer, identified as Damian Castro, who was involved in the rescue operation, told CNN that he didn’t really have the time to think during the rescue. "It happened so fast, we didn't really have that much time to think," he said. "All I could think was try to get this man to safety, didn't really want to look back to see how far the train was coming, you could hear it coming."

"It wasn't until I heard one of my fellow worker behind me say, ‘The train is coming and we need to get him out now,'" Officer Christopher told CNN, further adding that he was so focused on getting the pilot out that he never actually turned to see the train.

The incident took place after the aircraft "lost power" and "crashed onto tracks", as per the LAPD Operations-Valley Bureau. The pilot, who was the only person on board, was taken to the hospital and is now stable.
