Grandmother mistakenly smuggles Meth to Malaysia, sentenced to death

A lonely Australian grandmother Maria Elvira Pinto Exposto has been sentenced to death for smuggling Meth To Malaysia. She went to China in the year 2014 to meet her boyfriend named Capt Daniel Smith whom she met online and fell in love. 

After online dating for a while, she decided to go to Shanghai to see him in person. However, she wasn't aware that she was being cheated. When Maria was leaving, she was approached by a stranger, who asked her to take a backpack back to Melbourne to which she agreed. 

But, when she was taking the second flight which was a connecting flight at Kuala Lumpur International Airport, she unknowingly went through immigration. On offering her bag to the customs inspection, they discovered 1.1 kilograms of crystal meth. Then after she was arrested.

She was cleared of the charges in December 2017. A Malaysian High Court said that she was not aware while travelling with the drugs and fell prey to online romance.

During a court hearing, he said, "He made me feel loved, he made me feel wanted," she also added that her boyfriend often sang to her and sent her photos and poems. On the day she was acquitted, she wept and hugged her son. She said, "I'm happy now that I'm free."

However, the prosecutors appealed the acquittal, overturned and sentenced to death.
