Who is IPS officer Gagandeep Gambhir supervising CBI probe on Sushant Singh Rajput case

An Indian Police Service (IPS) officer of the 2004 batch, Gagandeep Gambhir, will be a part of the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) team looking over the death of Bollywood star Sushant Singh Rajput.

The case was transferred to the premier investigating agency by the Bihar government after the actor’s father KK Singh and the Bihar police alleged a cover-up by the Mumbai Police.

The central agency on Thursday regestered a case into Sushant’s death naming his girlfriend Rhea Chakraborty, her brother Showik and four others besides other unknown persons as accused.

Gagandeep Gambhir, along with senior IPS officer Manoj Shashidhar, will preside over the case which is being investigated by a special investigation team under superintendent of police Nupur Prasad. A 1994-batch IPS officer of the Gujarat cadre, Manoj Shashidhar, is the joint director of the CBI. Shashidhar was born and brought up in Bihar’s Muzaffarpur.

According to HT, Gagandeep’s father, Yogendra Singh Gambhir, said that his daughter was a bright and hardworking student from the start. She went to Punjab after Class 10 and completed her higher education from Punjab University. She was also the topper of the University.

Gagandeep has been in many districts in the western state as the senior superintendent of police, which includes Rajkot and has been posted in CBI for the last year and a half. The IPS officer has been a part of teams investigating many high profile cases and scams.

She had also overseen the probe into the alleged role of Samajwadi Party’s Akhilesh Yadav in the illegal mining case. She was also in the unit investigating the Srijan scam and journalist Upendra Rai case. Gagandeep also held additional charge of DIG in the SIT led by Joint Director Sai Manohar.

The team earlier led by Rakesh Asthana, is investigating important cases like that of Vijay Mallya and Agusta Westland. It is also probing coal scam-related cases, among others.

The Maharashtra police have raised objections to the jurisdiction of the Bihar police in the case. A final say on whether Bihar police have the authority to transfer a case to CBI will be taken by the Supreme Court of India later this week.
