Pune: 26-year-old man beaten to death by 12 passengers, including seven women over seat in train

A 26-year-old man was beaten to death by 12 passengers, including seven women, following an altercation over a seat in the Mumbai-Latur-Bidar Express on Thursday.

A small time fight gave way to a heated argument which eventually culminated into a physical assault. That has taken place in the general compartment of the train.

Jyoti, the victim’s wife, in her complaint, stated that her husband Sagar Markad, his mother and their two-year-old kid boarded the general compartment from Pune station at approximately 12.45 am.

Jyoti stated that she along with her family were on their way to their native Kurdwadi to take part in the last rites of her cousin.

The family started from Karjat in the Dadar-Chennai Express but got off after realising that the train would not stop at their desired station. The family then switched train at Pune Railway Station and embarked on Mumbai Latur Bidar Express.

According to Jyoti’s complaint, the bogie was crammed and since there was no place to sit, Sagar requested some women in the compartment to make some space for his wife. The women, however did not agree, and started arguing with Sagar.

The altercation intensified and all of a sudden the women along with the men they were accompanied by started beating up Sagar with sticks. Jyoti stated that she cried for help but no one came forward.

"Everyone went silent as Sagar became unconscious," Jyoti said.

When the Mumbai-Latur-Bidar Express stopped at Daund Junction, Jyoti got help from the Railway Police who immediately took Sagar to a nearby hospital wherein the doctors declared him dead on arrival.

The Railway Police at Daund Junction took 12 people into custody, including seven women, in connection with the incident. One of the 12 arrested people is underage and has been sent to a juvenile home.

A case under section 302 and other appropriate provision of the Indian Penal Code has been lodged against all the accused.
