Huge crowd at popular tourist spot in Goa amid worrying Covid surge, video goes viral

A massive crowd was seen at a tourist spot in Goa regardless of COVID-19 surge, in a clip that has been extensively shared on Twitter. The state of Goa has been seeing substantial number of tourists from late December as travellers arrived in the coastal state for the Christmas-New Year festival season.

The massive inrush of tourists, officials say, has led to the COVID-19 positivity rate, which went past 10 per cent on Sunday.

"This is a Royal welcome to the Covid wave. Mostly tourists," the Twitter user, who goes by the handle @Herman_Gomes, wrote.

The viral video displays hundreds of people walking on a road near West Goa’s Baga Beach.

Approximately 388 people have tasted positive in Goa in the past 24 hours, the figures put out by the Health Ministry showed.

The adding up of the new cases took the total in Goa to 1,81,570, while one death took the total tally to 3,523. it said.

Numerous domestic tourists have thronged the beaches, pubs and nightclubs of Goa to see in the New Year, even as the government introduced strict restrictions to check the spread of the latest Omicron variant of the coronavirus.

State authorities have put out instructions for hotels, restaurants and casinos to take in only guests with valid vaccination certificate or proof of a negative test result.
