Ex bank manager kills woman, injures another in bid to rob bank

In a shocking incident brought to light from Maharashtra, a heavily indebted ex-manager of a private bank allegedly murdered the current manager of the same bank on Thursday. The cashier at the bank also suffered injuries during the attack.

The incident took place at a bank situated in Virar, which is near Mumbai at around 7:30 pm on Thursday.

The accused is the erstwhile manager of the same branch of the bank where the incident of crime occurred, senior inspector Suresh Varade said.

The accused allegedly broke his way into the bank when all the employees, other than bank manager, identified as Yogita, aged 34 and cashier Sweta Devrukh, aged 32, had departed from the bank branch.

As maintained by reports, the accused went inside the bank branch in a bid to rob it. Being the ex-manager, the accused was aware of the safe and locker in the bank.

According to police, the accused issued threats to the staff after going inside the bank.

When the accused forced his way inside the current manager’s (Yogita Vartak) cabin, Shweta made an attempt to thwart him. However, the accused launched an attack on Yogita using a knife. He also began hostilities towards the cashier (Shweta).

As the tussle flared up at the bank, people on the streets took notice of the ruckus. They got hold of the accused and approached the cops. The accused was then handed to officials.

People found Yogita Vartak lying motionless soaked in blood inside the bank, while the cashier was badly hurt.

After the horrifying incident, Yogita Vartak succumbed to her injuries at a hospital and her body was sent for autopsy. In the meantime, Shweta was taken to a private hospital, where she was going through treatment.

So far, the police haven’t found out the motive behind the crime. Sources indicate that the accused was heavily indebted and had a huge loan to pay.

The accused "is a former manager of the same branch of the bank where the drama unfolded. He had taken a loan of Rs 1 crore and in order to repay the amount, he conspired to loot this bank...," police were quoted by PTI as saying.

Police inspector Suresh Warade stated that a probe has been launched into the case and officials are investigating if there was any personal enmity or financial angle to the crime.

A case has been filed against the accused under IPC sections 302 (murder), 307 (attempt to murder) and 397 (robbery, or dacoity, with an attempt to cause death or grievous hurt) at Virar police station.
