Coronavirus lockdown: Irked at not getting liquor, 2 men commit suicide in Karnataka

In continuing cases of alcoholics in the southern states ending their lives becaus of non-availability of liquor in the time of lockdown, two men committed suicide in Dakshina Kannada district in Karnataka.

The two suicides were reported in Kadaba taluk on Saturday, said police.

Tomy Thomas (50), a rubber tapping workman in an estate at Kutrupadi village, was found hanging at his residence on Saturday. He was a native of Kottayam in Kerala, and had joined the estate a month ago.

According to locals, he was desperately moving around in the last few days asking about places where he could get liquor. He had not been reporting for work for the last few days. The body has been kept at the mortuary at Deralakatte.

In another incident, a 70-year-old man from Kodimbala village in taluk, allegedly hanged himself from the branch of a tree near his house at Nakur.

The deceased has been identified as Thomas, who had abandoned his family 30 years ago and had been working in Kerala. He returned here only a few year back.

According to sources, Thomas, an alcholic,was having health issues related to withdrawal. He has been living on pavements at Kadaba without going home.

Kadaba police has filed cases in connection with the two incidents.
