Republic Day Parade 2020: Gautam Gambir lauds Capt Tania Shergill who lead all-men contingent

A fourth-generation Army officer Captain Tania Shergill of Corps of Signals led the all-men contingent ceremonial Republic Day parade at Rajpath today. Recently, the 26-year-old Captain became the first woman Parade Adjutant in the history of the Army Day function held on 15th January.

Owing to this former Indian cricketer-turned-politician Gautam Gambir took to his Twitter handle to laud the Captain. He wrote, “Being a father of two daughters, it makes me feel proud to see a woman leading men in the Republic Day Parade. Hats off Tania Shergill, keep going! Happy Republic Day to all. #71stRepublicDay”

Talking about Captain Tania in an interview she said that her affinity towards the Army developed at an early age because her father was in 101 Medium Regiment (Artillery). Her grandfather was in the 14th Armed Regiment (Scinde Horse) and her great grandfather was in the Sikh Regiment.

When asked on women’s representation in the Army, she said that admission in the armed forces is not based on a person’s gender, caste, religion or where he/she is coming from rather is based on merit. If a person is deserving, worthy then they should go ahead.

Meanwhile, last year a woman officer Bhavana Kasturi, then lieutenant, had for the first time led an all-men Army Services Corps (ASC) contingent during the Republic Day parade.
