Punjab gives Captain Amarinder Singh the best birthday gift ever

Captain Amarinder Singh is on course to becoming the Chief Minister of Punjab for the second time as the Congress is heading towards a comfortable majority in the state. Trends suggest that the party is heading towards a tally of above 60 seats, exceeding the predictions of most of the exit polls.

The party has done well across all the three regions in Punjab, particularly in Majha and Doaba. The Aam Aadmi Party would be disappointed with its performance. Leads indicate that it may wind up with a tally of less than 30 seats. This is less than the 33 seats it led in during the 2014 Lok Sabha elections.

The Congress vote share is 38% well above that of AAP and SAD. Many of its senior leaders are also on course to victory: Amarinder Singh in Patiala, Navjot Singh Sidhu in Amritsar East and Manpreet Badal in Bathinda, Amarinder Singh Raja Warringh in GIdderbaha, Vijay Inder Singla in Sangrur, Fatehjung Bajwa in Qadian, to name a few

The exit polls had predicted a far closer contest between Congress and AAP but that doesn't seem to have been the case.

AAP would further be disappointed by the fact that most of its senior leaders are trailing: Bhagwant Mann is lagging behind outgoing deputy chief minister Sukhbir Singh Badal in Jalalabad. Jarnail Singh and Himmat Singh Shergill were also unable to make an impact in Lambi and Majitha respectively. Gurpeet Ghuggi and HS Phoolka are engaged in a close contest in Batala and Dakha.

The SAD-BJP combine performed better than expected. Outgoing chief minsiter Parkash Singh Badal is leading against Captain Amarinder Singh in Lambi, his deputy Sukhbir Badal is leading against AAP's Bhagwant Mann in Jalalabad. Other members of the Badal clan - Bikram Majithia in Majitha and Adesh Partap Kairon in Patti - are also leading.
