At least 29 were killed and over 400 injured in powerful twin earthquakes in Kyushu island of Japan on 16 April. The epicentre of the 7.3-magnitude quakes was located 1 km southwest of Kumamoto city. Officials said that reports on injured are changing fast and it is difficult to give the exact final figure.

Thousands of residents sought refuge in hotel lobbies, restaurants, parks and gymnasiums of the city.

Before the deadly earthquakes in Kumamoto region, Kyushu was hit by a magnitude-6.5 quake on 14 April, which claimed the lives of 10 and injured over 800. The quake struck near Ueki, the US Geological Survey said. Dozens of smaller aftershocks followed. Two deaths occurred in Mashiki, according to the Kumamoto Prefecture office said.

Meanwhile, the Japan Meteorological Agency has also issued a tsunami warning.
