Taliban attack security checkpoints in Afghanistan's Parwan province

Taliban insurgents on Saturday carried out a coordinated attack on checkpoints along the Ghorband Highway in the Jabal Saraj district of Parwan Province located north of Kabul.

District police chief Mohammad Masoom Farzayee said the Taliban launched an attack from several directions at about 5 a.m. on these checkpoints and also tried to kidnap several bus passengers.

"Taliban insurgents carried out the attack along the Ghorband Highway and tried to kidnap bus passengers travelling along the road, but security forces were able to rescue them," Tolo News quoted Farzayee, as saying.

The incident took place in Pul-e-Ashaba area in Jabal Saraj district and resulted in the closure of the highway to traffic.

Clashes were still underway between the security forces and Taliban insurgents when reports last came in.

According to Parwan officials one Taliba insurgent has been killed. The Taliban has not commented on the incident. There are no reports of security forces or civilian casualties.
