While the photograph of three-year-old Syrian child Aylan Kurdi washed ashore in Turkey has gone viral, drawing criticism and ire from the world over due to the Gulf countries' apathy towards the refugees, King Salman Bin Abdulaziz of Saudi Arabia has booked the entire 222 room Four Seasons Hotel in the US for his three-day visit.

According to a Tribune report, guests were forced to move to nearby hotels to accommodate the Saudi King.

Bahrain, Kuwait, Oman, Qatar, Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates, the six countries which fall under the Gulf Cooperation Council, have accepted very few refugees while more than four million people have fled Syria so far.

Reportedly, new gold flooring and red carpets were laid down in the hotel hallway for the 79-year-old King. Gold mirrors, lamps, hat racks have also been installed, at a time when the neighboring country of Syria is facing the 'biggest humanitarian crisis' and is receiving no support from countries which share a similar culture and religious values.

How bad is the Syrian crisis?

  • More than 11 million people have been displaced so far and over four million have fled the country.
  • The unrest started after civilians began protesting the government in March, 2011 and the government reacted with a violent crackdown.
  • Over 220,000 people have been killed in the civil war, half of whom are civilians.
  • According to U.N. estimates, there may be 4.27 million Syrian refugees by the end of 2015.
