On Fidel Castro's 90th birthday, this man wants to break a world record with a 90m long cigar

To celebrate revolutionary leader Fidel Castro's 90th birthday, a Cuban tobacconist is attempting to break his own world record by rolling a 90-metre cigar.

"It is 90 metres long, to commemorate 90 years of our comandante," maker Jose Castelar, better known as 'Cueto', told AFP ahead of Castro's birthday on 13 August.

According to the report, Castelar made this giant creation with the aim to break the Guinness World Record for the world's longest cigar for the sixth time - a record he holds for an 81.80-metre cigar he made in 2011.

It took Castelar and his team 12 hours a day for 10 days to roll the cigar, which is the width of an ordinary one.

The cigar is part of the iconic image of the communist former president, who took power in Cuba's 1959 revolution and ruled for nearly half a century.

Castro, in his younger days, was photographed with one cigar in his mouth while dressed in his military fatigues.

"He hasn't smoked for years, but the gift we are offering him is the hard work that we have done to commemorate his birthday,"Castelar was quoted as saying, adding that the leader does not know him.

The length of the cigar was verified by a British Embassy official, who said the information would be sent in a letter to Guinness World Records requesting confirmation of the record, says the report.
