A gunman in France has shot dead three police officers who were called to a domestic violence incident, officials said.

In a shocking incident, a gunman allegedly killed one police officer and wounded another. He also set the house ablaze and then killed two more officers who arrived at the spot.

The incident has been reported in France, where a woman had fled to the roof of a house in the remote village of Saint-Just early on Wednesday when the man tried to kill her.

However, she was rescued, the BBC reported. Police are still trying to locate the suspect (48), who is said to be known to authorities on child custody issues.

According to the mayor of Saint-Just, Francois Chautard told Le Figaro that the gunman had burned the house completely. However, officers were trying to find whether the suspect was still inside the house or he had fled from the spot.

Later, a police source told BFMTV that it was believed the gunman escaped, the BBC reported.

Elite tactical police officers and firefighters remain at the scene in the village in the Puy-de-Dome department, in France's Massif Central mountain region.
